 Mother’s Day Cinema Visit  Time Problem  

I can solve time based problems including arrival/departure times, travel time and total  time spent on an activity. (ACMMG086)  

Lucas had a busy day with his mum for  

Mother’s day! They hopped on a bus at  

9:10a.m. to travel to the cinema. They  

had 10 minutes when they arrived at  

the cinema before the movie they saw  

began at 9:50a.m. The movie went on  

for two hours. Lucas and his mum then  

hopped back on the bus at 12:05p.m.  

and arrived at the bus stop at their  

home at 12:35pm

Questions: 

1. How long did it take Lucas and his mum to travel on the bus from the cinema to the bus  stop near their home? 35-5=30 

30 minutes

2. What time did they get off the bus at the cinema? 9:50 the movie started and they arrived 10 minutes earlier.9:50 - 10 = 9:40   9:40am

3. What time did the movie finish? 9:50am+2hours = 11:50am

4. How long did it take Lucas and his mum to travel from their home bus stop to the cinema? 9;40 - 9:10 = 30 minutes

5. How long was it from when Lucas and his mum first got on the bus to when they arrived back home?  12;35 -12;05 = 30 minutes
